Hi guys, lets say its my turn. I have a Zektar Shrine Expedition with 2 Counters on it, then i play a Mountain, so I get to put a counter on it. Then after all that, my opponent wants to bounce my Expedition back to my hand. Am I able to respond to it by sacrificing it before he can bounce my Expedition?

You opponent is better off bouncing your 7/1 instead. – EndangeredMassa Feb 28 at 23:37

I think yes, you can:

  1. He puts Into the Roil onto the stack
  2. You sacrifice your Zektar Shrine Expedition

Now the stack resolves: your shrine gets sacrificed and Into the Roil has no valid target - nothing is sent to it's owners hand. He should have saved into the roil until you sacrificed your shrine and should have targeted the 7/1 elemental ;)

Conversely, if he's using into the roil in response to the ability about to place the third counter you can't because it only has two counters left. – Shushoto Feb 27 at 19:02
good objection Shushoto, I didn't thought about that. Androth wrote "[...]so I get to put a counter on it. Then after all that [...]" so I guess the counter is already on the enchantment – tobsen Feb 27 at 19:46
"Now the stack resolves: your shrine gets sacrificed..." - not exactly; sacrificing is a cost and happens when you play the ability rather than when it resolves – Silly Freak Feb 28 at 9:57

As Shushoto remarked, if he times it correctly there's nothing you can do.

  1. You play a mountain
  2. An "Add one counter" effect goes on the stack
  3. At this point, he can play the roil, before you have 3 counters

This way, you can't use Zektar's ability, and the "add one counter" effect fizzles because the Zektar is in your hand already.

Ok thanks :) He didn't timed it correctly, but I wasn't sure if I could sacrifice in respond, and i didn't. Well the Match ended 1-2 which was my only Lose on the draft tournament on friday >_O – Androth Feb 28 at 17:58
