Thanks everyone for using Draw3Cards! August was a very good month for us: Yearly stats and Monthly Stats

I've seen recently many players with alternate art painted right onto their cards... I guess it brings the hobby to a whole new level... Where / how much does that normaly cost...?

I currently wrote a small piece for a local artist by me, but I was wondering if there was any established people I could compare her to?

They are legal if they are slightly altered. Since that's kinda arbitrary it's best to ask a judge if you can play your altered copies before you start the tournament.

I've been altering my own cards for a while now, I tend to alter the key pieces of my decks. I like it like that, makes the special cards in the deck stand out a bit.

I have not seen altered cards bend not even after heavy play for a couple of months.

Anyway, the best card alters I've seen: http://cardkitty.com/gallery.php?view=borderless&page=1 (That's not my stuff!)

wow, they look pretty nice! I think WOTC should reconsider change the look of their cards! – Adrianf Jun 3 at 21:56
They do (Planeswalkers, Planes, Schemes, colorless Eldrazi) – ubes Jun 3 at 22:46

Altering the art on your cards will make them illegal for play. By attending Friday Night Magic events at a MTG store in your area you can win promotional cards with alternate art. Some are full card art, some are foil.

Either way, I've never heard of anyone "getting" them altered.

Why would it make them illegal? As long as the card back is the same .... – ripper234 Feb 5 at 13:50
It's the copyright issue. If they weren't printed for WOTC, they weren't licensed. – Shushoto Feb 5 at 15:27
Also the ink would most likely cause the card to curl a bit like foils do after a while. That makes it "marked." If you can cut directly to a card you can't use it. – DarkMantle Feb 7 at 2:00

I heard that as long as you do not alter the back of the card/put it in a protector, it is still legal.

there are two threads at least in mtgsalvation.com that showcase altered cards and deal in them.
