Reanimator is an deck archetype in which the goal is to put powerful creatures into the graveyard (using Buried Alive, for example) and them bring them back to the battlefield cheaply (using spells like Reanimate, which gave the archetype its name).

Which creatures are good reanimation targets? I already have a number of creatures I like to use in this deck, but I'm curious to hear what other think.

Teneb, the Harvester and Reya Dawnnringer give the reanimation a boost.

[[Teneb, the Harvester]] [[Reya Dawnbringer]]

Visara the Dreadful and Avatar of Woe are efficient creature removal.

Phantom Nishoba and Divinity of Pride offset the life used to pay for spells.

Angel of Despair can deal with permanent types that black typically has lots of trouble with (e.g. enchantments, artifacts, planeswalkers).

Sliver Queen can generate token creatures for spells requiring sacrifices (e.g. Recurring Nightmare).

I play this deck against many different types of opponents, so I tend to favor variety and utility. – CodeSavvyGeek Jan 29 at 3:01

You know what I hadn't noticed until now? Angel of Despair kills planeswalkers in the face. – Krinn Feb 1 at 20:16

Vampire hounds is a great way to get more creatures in your graveyard too.

Vampire Hounds

Then bring them all back at once with living death.

Living Death

A friend of mine has a deck based around this concept. Since you can discard cards at will he put in some huge green stomp. And a couple lord of the pits.

I like both Vampire Hounds and Living Death for this deck, but I'm not so sure about Lord of the Pitt. His drawback is significant, and this deck is not really set up to deal with it (e.g. with a creature generator like Breeding Pit). Kalonian Behemoth just doesn't seem "interesting" enough to warrant inclusion. – CodeSavvyGeek Feb 17 at 22:25

Here's my second idea then:

[[Cairn Wanderer]]

Making sure you have cards with Shoud and Lifelink among other abilities in your graveyard would be useful. I'll point out two that you can pull with the wanderer:

[[Sphinx of the Steel Wind]][[Giant Solifuge]]

Death's Shadow is still useful in the converse case that life is lost by reanimator.

Progenitus won't ever get to the graveyard - re-read the rule text :) – ripper234 Jan 29 at 13:14
And no doubt that was intentional on part of R&D – Shushoto Jan 29 at 13:54
Yeap, it's not there for flavor reasons :) – ripper234 Jan 29 at 14:28
Darksteel Colossus has the same clause. – CodeSavvyGeek Jan 29 at 19:50
+1 Sphinx of the Steel wind is similar to Akroma (Wrath or Fury); I could include all 3 and have the option to hose any of the colors. Although, I suppose I could include Iridescent Angel and cover all the bases at once. – CodeSavvyGeek Jan 29 at 20:09
