Why isn't Eldrazi Monument an Eldrazi spell?

[[eldrazi monument]] [[Eye of Ugin]]

I think why "Eye of Ugin" is not an eldrazi card begs to be answered more. Did anyone notice you cannot use Eldrazi Temple add (2) mana ability to activate Eye of Ugin? – theatog May 27 at 18:22

Best guess: They didn't want to put the tribal mechanic on a single card and confuse new players. Tribal spells (that is, noncreature spells with a creature type) are straightforward once you're used to them, but they may well just stay in their own block, til they're revived en masse. It can quite easily be justified, flavourwise, either way, for the card to have or lack the type, so they picked the simpler option, for the sake of elegance.

I really haven't seen Rise of Eldrazi yet, I was probably jumping to the conclusion there will be Eldrazi Artifacts in ROE from Eye of Ugin. But ... there's a good chance it will only have actual Eldrazi creatures that are not artifacts. – ripper234 Jan 25 at 13:36
As it turns out, there are tribal eldrazi spells in ROE: [[[All Is Dust]]] [[[Eldrazi Conscription]]] and [[[Not of This World]]] – tobsen Apr 24 at 18:13
and I forgot [[[Skittering Invasion]]] – tobsen Apr 24 at 18:17

i'd say for the same reason that Akroma's Memorial isn't an angel...

[[Akroma, Angel of Wrath]] [[Akroma's Memorial]] [[Eldrazi Monument]]

Eldrazi monument is not an eldrazi, but a...monument, a human-made stone sculpture

btw, memorial and Monument seem to be related, they both grant abilities to all your creatures that seem to belong to the being it's modeled after

I assumed that an Eldrazi Artifact will be an artifact made by Eldrazi ... which presumably the monument is. – ripper234 Jan 24 at 16:13

by this reasoning, most equipment should be human, or some other race. I have to admit that for tribals the "rules" of subtyping are not the same as for creatures, so your reasoning is not so wrong. However, Tribal is a mechanic Wizards seems to restrict to tribal sets, because it would add unnecessary complexity - as kyle said – Silly Freak Jan 24 at 21:22

Probably because they wanted to leave the existence of Tribal Eldrazi cards to be more of a surprise in Rise of the Eldrazi. It was rather subtly hinted at by Eye of Ugin, but most people didn't expect spells like All is Dust until they were previewed. If Eye of Ugin itself had been a Tribal Eldrazi card, that would have given that away.

Also, I suspect they really enjoyed getting to write in the Worldwake FAQ, "Eldrazi is a creature type that, as of the Worldwake release, has not yet been printed on any creatures."

(1) It's worth noting that there aren't any Tribal Lands yet, so a desire to not break precedent would be another factor against [[[Eye of Ugin]]] being given the Eldrazi subtype.

(2) All the Tribal Artifacts that currently exist have an effect that happens when a creature of that tribe enters the battlefield (specifically, attaching that tribal artifact to that creature). [[[Eldrazi Monument]]] doesn't, so again, giving it the Tribal - Eldrazi types would break precedent.

(3) The Monument and the Eye are already powerful enough; no need to make them moreso by giving them a very loaded subtype.

To answer a question With a question: why isn't Tezzeret a planewalker artifact?

But to answer your question, I imagine that the colourless Eldrazi spells will have coloured costs but no color like ghost fire which has Ugin's name in its flavor text.

[[Ghostfire]]

I think the reason is mostly power level concern. He would be much more vulnerable were he an artifact. Your answer doesn't really answer my question - here is an artifact, most likely built by the Eldrazi ... why isn't it an Eldrazi Artifact? – ripper234 Jan 23 at 12:53

The next set is RISE OF THE ELDERAZY isn't it? i heard rumours there's gonna be a-lot of artifacts with some sort of similiarity to mirrodin or somthing like that..who knows?lol
