Is there an archetype that's worth pushing for in a draft? (Regardless any specific draft) What deck type / colors are you most happy with when drafting?

In the basic sets, like M10, 10E etc I always tried to get Green and some other colour, just because in those sets, green was landbuilding, green was trample, green was big creatures. I would get the other colour for my 'win', as in some unstoppable creature or insane control / damage card. In normal sets I don't have a colour I want to pick, but there is a standard setting i like to keep into, which is something like:

As for winability, I'd say white, black and/or green. Green gives you the fatties you really want to win with in a draft, white gives you some nice/modest control, and black gives you speed as well as some nice bombs and control |

From my 5 drafts so far what ive picked up is this: 3 or more toughness is important. Every color has some cheap gut with a fat behind and one or two of these can stop an aggro deck dead in their tracks. Blue has craken hatchling, red has Molten ravager, White has the shieldmate, green has recluse and the bard at 4cc and black has scorpion. Due to this ive seldom have problems overcomming the cheap aggro decks. Fliers are good, very good. The format actually resembels core set draft just with a littlle more interactions. As for archetypes allies is good, UW fliers is good, mono red can be good, BR is decent but usually lacks in good critts and is hard on mana with the good cards mostly being doubble colored. |

I have mostly been following this strategy: Stay away from green- this is based on games me and my brother failed at. green seems to have drops that are simply too slow, good 5/6 drops mostly. also a 1 turn mana screw can lose games in thia format and a higher curve raises the chances of this. also some cards in it are only good if it's your heavey main colour and as it is bad it soudln't be. take note of curve though look for low costed creature- usually I would look for about 3 two drops -4 three drop 3- four drops 2 five drops and a high cost bomb or two but in zendikar draft i want at least 6 one/two costed creatures that are aggressive so they have 2 power or something similar, 4 three drops 3 four drops and a high costed bomb or two. notice decent allies in your colours- at first i didn't like allies but now I see that most of them are decent in aggro, the red and black once especially. I woudn't splash for an ally or pick one over a decent removale but i still would try to collect many in a draft that seems to pass them along as late picks. Also I am not sure but some people say you should be playing 18 lands in this set, I guess for landfall and to make sure you don't get that critical land too late, but I hate drawing too many of them as well... the best draft decks I've drafted have been: RB allies, WU Flying aggro, WB/WR/RB low costed aggro. I have drafted 5 times and drafted online about 12 times I think, though the shuffler on online has been very mean to me lately... |
