I'm more of a control player myself, but if I find strong aggro cards I might try drafing an aggro deck. Then, I invariably fail. My deck runs out of fuel, and I lose to more powerful control decks.

What are some good tips or strategies to drafting a decent aggro deck?

i think these are some good tips:

  • At least 15 creatures, most of them at low-medium mana curve.
  • You should have some spells or enchantments that boost all your creatures, like Overrun or HOTP (honor of the pure). The allies in Zendikar are a great modern example. Sleep is also very good because it practically gives you another turn to attack with all your guys.
  • Removals/combat tricks are always good. Mass removals are very good, just be careful not to kill too many of your guys.

Zendikar's allies are not what I'll take when drafting an aggro deck. First, they are dispersed over all five colors which disturbs your mana base. Also, some are really costly or defensive (Makindi Shieldmate). What's the average casting cost you aim for when drafting aggro? Are 5-6 CC spells totally out of the question? – ripper234 Oct 19 at 20:09
they are not out of the question but you need they to be few and you need them to be worth it. Red and black allies are more aggresive but still they should be a minor theme in your deck unless you find yourself picking up at least 6 good ones. – rif-raf Nov 2 at 22:01

pick up the most aggresive low cost creatures in your colours, there are lots of 1/2 costed creatures with two power, they are recommended. try to avoid powerful cards that cost more then four if you can get nice 1/2/3 drops or removels instead. you want 15+ creatures that have at least 12 drops that cost 4 or less, especially two drops in this format. Lots of creatures only get powerful during your turn or during attacks, so racing is very common and blocking isn't very effective.

The best creatures (and signals for colour) are kor skyfisher, kazanadu blademaster, vampire nighthawk, plated geopede and probably living tsunami. there are other good ones like Steppe Lynx, Kor Aeronaut, Windrider Eel, Umara Raptor, gatekeeper of malakir, welkin tern, Goblin Shortcutter, Goblin Bushwacker, kor hookmaster, vampire lacerator, and if you want grren you have: Oran-Rief Survivalist, Grazing Gladehart and Timbermaw Larva. probably bladetusk boar and the vampire that makes opponents lose life whenever they play creatures. These are all very good creature for an aggro deck and are what makes zendikar this crazy format, but they aren't as higly picked as the five I marked and are usually passed for them, for big finisher bombs and for decent removels so you can get more of these for picks 3-7 probably.

Aperatently if green is extremely avaliable you can get multiple copies of good aggressive green cards such including ones I forgot like river boa and turntimber basilisk.

I added names for those cards which I recognized. Who's the 2/1 flyer for 2, and who's the 2/2 vampire? If you mean Gatekeeper of Malakir, that is a first-pick for any kind of deck that plays black. Also, do you consider Living Tsunami a small aggro creature? – Avish Nov 2 at 22:48
I'll add the rest of the names. the tsunami isn't small but he is definatly not yoo expensive for aggro decks, and neither is bladetusk boar for that matter. – rif-raf Nov 2 at 23:17
As has been mentioned in another question, Gatekeeper isn't a first pick because it is very committing and not targeted - you will remove your opponent's worst creature, not best. And for aggroo ... you'll need another color, which means you won't be able to kick it until turns 4-5. – ripper234 Nov 3 at 7:15
but he is a wonderful tempo aggro card if your mono black or 70% black, you might not play him on turn 3 but he will usually remove a good enemy creature and start attacking for 2. They may choose wich creature dies, but it is still an extra dead creature in a format that is all about the race to 0 life. – rif-raf Nov 3 at 9:26
